19th Century Bronze Buddhist Sculpture, Burma, ABA24

From Burma, this remarkable bronze sculpture consists of two heavenly angels supporting a temple bell that hangs from a rod decorated with two peacocks. The sculpture is influenced by Buddhist tradition in Burma where the temple bell  plays an important role. You can read about the tradition of bell casting in Burma and the role of temple bells here.

The angels that support the hung bell are beautifully cast, wearing elaborate costumes and their faces bearing a lovely, peaceful countenance. Sitting atop the bells are two guardian lions or ‘to-naya’. The patina shows a significant degree of oxidization, common to older bronze images.
