Early 20th Century Sculpture of The Buddha and Monks, ABA14

Early 20th Century Sculpture of The Buddha and Monks, ABA14

In this set of teak carvings, the Buddha is accompanied by three monks from the original Sangha some 2500 years ago. The Buddha is easily distinguished from the monks by his hair frame, attenuated earlobes and height. The set is from the early 1900s and was carved in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand. Each figure is sensitively sculpted, showing unique personal characteristics. The wood was originally painted, and now has an attractive, worn patina with the teakwood showing through in some places. A few remnants of gold gilt can be seen on some of the figures. Being images to which religious respect is paid, this item will require certification by the Chiang Mai Museum before leaving the country, causing a delay of 1-2 weeks.
