Traditional Tribal Textile by the Chin, TTC01

The Chin are a tribal, mountain dwelling people found in the highlands of north-west Burma. They have a long tradition of weaving and continue to produce attractive hand woven textiles using the back strap method on a yakan loom. Natural dyes are used by taking extracts from indigenous plants such as the Burmese lacquer tree, wild almonds, mahogany, annatto seeds and indigo. The Chin are widely admired for their unique designs and superior weaving skills. The piece offered here is particularly impressive at 3.4 meters (about 11 ft) and combines black and red silk thread with ivory cotton. An intricate diamond motif is woven throughout the piece. It ends in fine cotton tassels.
